Acquisitions

Brian Farrell and Sandy Hunter, eds. A Great Betrayal? The Fall of Singapore Revisited. Singapore: Marshall Cavendish Editions, 2010. A diverse collection of articles: strategy, historiography, oral history, operational history. Of particular interest is a contribution by John Ferris on British perceptions of Japanese airpower (includes Darth Vader bonus quote).

A. L. Goodhart. What Acts of War are Justifiable? Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1940. In particular, justifiable against civilians (such as bombing, reprisals). No. 42 in the Oxford Pamphlets on World Affairs series.

Martin Middlebrook and Chris Everitt. The Bomber Command War Diaries: An Operational Reference Book 1939-1945. Hersham: Midland Publishing, 2011 [1985]. A classic (and weighty!) reference listing nearly all Bomber Command missions, targets, results, losses, etc, which I have wanted for some time.

Peter Monteath. P.O.W.: Australian Prisoners of War in Hitler's Reich. Sydney: Pan Macmillan Australia, 2011. I already own a book called POWbut that is about Allied POWs in general. I probably should read it before I read this one though!

Hi Brett re: Brian Farrell and Sandy Hunter, eds. A Great Betrayal? The Fall of Singapore Revisited. Singapore: Marshall Cavendish Editions, 2010.

I've searched and not been able to find a table of contents for this book. I believe it is a re-print of Brian Farrell and Sandy Hunter, eds. Sixty Years On. The Fall of Singapore Revisited. Singapore: Marshall Cavendish Academic, 2006 which came out of a conference held in 2002 at the Department of History at the National University of Singapore. If I'm right then the chapter by John Ferris is titled "Student and Master: The United Kingdom, Japan, Airpower, and the Fall of Singapore, 1920-1941.

Could you let me know if this is correct please - if not then I'll look to get hold of a copy as I'm especially interested in the role of airpower in the fall of Singapore; my BA Hons dissertation was on this topic and one day I hope to be able to write a book on this.

    Thanks,
    Mike

It looks like it is a 'revised edition' of that book. The introduction by Farrell says the original book was 'influential enough to prompt the publishers to decide to reach out to a wider audience by releasing this revised edition, which focuses more directly on the event in question rather than working through the prism of the conference that spawned the collection of essays' (viii). But what's new and what's not isn't indicated (though that is indeed the title of the Ferris essay). I can send you the table of contents if you like.

I'd appreciate a copy of the table of contents please. I'll post the contents from the 2006 edition later when I have access to my copy of the book.

Brett kindly sent me a scan of the table of contents of the new edition and having compared it with the 2006 edition it looks like they are identical - the only (possible) difference being that the last chapter by Sandy Hunter is called "The Fall of Singapore Revisited" whereas it is titled "Betrayal" in the newer edition.
